Box Office Buzz: Toy Story 3 #5 All Time/#1 in 2010 + Labor Day Boost!

Upcoming Pixar 6 Sep 2010, 4:41 am CEST

It’s not very often that we get films that have truly exciting journeys at the box-office — especially this far along. Last year we had Avatar, The Dark Knight a year before that; a decade ago it was Titanic. Today, we have Toy Story 3! In fact, Pixar’s 11th has just passed the caped crusader and Alice in Wonderland to become the fifth highest grossing film of all time and the #1 film of the year worldwide! Just last week, Buzz and Woody were able to cross the elusive $1 billion dollar mark— great news for both Disney and Pixar. More recent global estimates put Lee Unkrich’s latest at an excellent $1.029 billion — $621M coming from outside of the US/Canada. Domestically, Toy Story 3 was extended to 1,500 theatres over Labor Day Weekend. Friday through Sunday brought in an estimated $1.9 million — a huge boost from last week’s humdrum $100K daily. Check back to see how Toy Story 3 fares over Monday’s holiday. Your predictions? (Numbers via Box Office Mojo)

Newt Concept Art Revealed!

Upcoming Pixar 3 Sep 2010, 9:44 pm CEST

First you cancel Newt and then you tease us with stunning artwork? Oh, Pixar! In an unexpected move, 29 pieces of concept art from Gary Rydstrom’s amphibian project were released on Disney/Pixar’s official Facebook fanpage. As we’ve come to expect from the studio, everything looks gorgeous. On one hand, you have to trust that Pixar shelved the project with good reason… but just look at that art! How could they resist? Today’s big reveal covers all the bases; you’ll see the title character with Brooke as well as a group of scientists and sidekicks. Honestly, I never thought Pixar would ever mention Newt again, but I’m definitely not complaining. If anything, we’ll have a better idea of how the movie might have played out. 1500 Theatres To Run Toy Story 3 Over Labor Day Weekend!

Upcoming Pixar 3 Sep 2010, 5:14 pm CEST

Attention: Don’t miss (what could be) your final opportunity to catch Toy Story 3 in US theatres!

Lee Unkrich tweeted Tuesday: "Hey, America! Want one last chance to see Toy Story 3 on the big screen? We’ll be back in over 1500 theaters for Labor Day Weekend!" Before the expansion (which begins today and ends Monday), Toy Story 3 was down to <600 venues nationwide. This upgrade brings back a significant chunk of over 4,000 theatres that originally ran Pixar’s widest opening to date — since then, the film has grossed more than $1 billion dollars worldwide!  After the holiday weekend, I wouldn’t be surprised if Buzz and Woody were harder to find than (get ready for a cheesy Pixar joke) the Pizza Planet truck in The Incredibles. That is, until the Blu-ray and DVD release hits store shelves on November 2nd. Check your local movie times to see if Pixar’s 11th is playing near you! Will you catch Toy Story 3 in theatres this Labor Day weekend?

Apple Shows Off New Line-up with Pixar!

Upcoming Pixar 2 Sep 2010, 5:27 am CEST

Today’s Apple presentation was no exception to "the Pixar rule." It’s become somewhat of a tradition. Steve Jobs shows of his latest gadgets, and among other films, the latest from Pixar is used as an example of the product’s quality. The new devices in question are the 2010 incarnations of the iPod touch and Apple TV. Toy Story 3 is seen above in publicity stills demonstrating features such as AirPlay and the Retina display. Although it will be considerably less talked about, the most important innovation from today’s presentation (as far as Pixar is concerned) is the enhanced Apple TV. In my opinion, this is the future of how we rent movies. Just think about how many people can "discover" often overlooked films like A Bug’s Life with just a click of a button. Note: This post is not meant to be proper coverage of Apple’s recent event. For more details on the all of latest products, don’t hesistate to visit Apple’s site. What’s your opinion on Pixar + Apple’s synergy?
